This box was commissioned as a wedding present, so to commemorate the occasion, the date was carved into the inside of the lid. The outside of the lid was rough bandsawed then slightly smoothed with sand paper, which creates an effect that is inviting to the touch and allows the figure to show through primarily where it has been smoothed. The box bottom is camphor wood, which releases a lovely aroma when the lid is opened. The dovetails are left slightly proud to emphasize the joinery and to add some visual and tactile texture to an otherwise simple design.
