The inspiration for this design was the structural integrity and beautiful figure of the end grain of this particular species of mahogany. I cut very thin slices of the end grain for the lid and the box bottom, then book-matched them to emphasize their figure. Since most woods are not stable enough to use this way, I utilized the strength of this wood and made it a feature of the design. The lid has a center piece of wenge wood which functions as the handle, and the mahogany is slightly tapered on either side, giving the lid an architectural appearance.
